Want to write “what a man should look like”, but men should look lots of ways. So I’ll just write that this is one way that I really really like men to look
so I love this photo, have loved it since the first time I saw it and I don’t even remember when that was. and I saw it last weekend at the Brooklyn Museum in the 1920s exhibit (“Youth and Beauty” which, well, let’s just leave that alone for a minute) and I had to make my friend turn around and come back to it because he’d missed it and it’s worth standing in front of the luminous, silvery print of and just taking in for a minute.
we don’t think about working people this way anymore, we don’t think about the beauty of work, of physicality, of this type of masculinity (which as Molly said is only one of many types), except maybe with athletes. and the way we don’t know how to talk about sports as work (though the athletes often understand themselves as workers as we’re seeing in Indiana) is an entirely different thing (and goes back to “Youth and Beauty” which is just a little bit more than I can get to right now).
