Taken at my cubicle, November 2010.
Yeah, yeah, say what you want about Barbies and gender socialization and body image. And I’ll look at you dead in the eye and say, even with that, I find my inspiration and affirmation in the trinity of them.
Then I’d give you the Kanye shrug and keep moving.
wait. they made a Storm doll? or is that a mod?
Yep, Mattel made an actual, factual alternate-universe Mohawk’d Storm doll. My ex-husband bought me one at a toy store back in the late ’90s-early ’00s. I lost it on my travels from Ohio to Boston to NYC and looked for it online for years. I finally found—and bought!—that same doll two years ago on eBay in good condition. (Box slightly dented, doll in perfect condition. The dealer said someone just happened to bring it into his comics store and sold it to him.)
She, Princess Tiana, and the Basic Black Barbie all sit in my cubicle like sentinels.
LOVE.
