Anonymous asked: I understand why a lot of people have a problem with The Daily Show because of the lack of women, lack of minorities, and refusal to acknowledge the issue. But shouldn't our problem be with the media in general and not just The Daily Show? Underrepresentation is a problem on a lot of shows and a lot of networks. I agree that there's an issue, I just think that its bigger than The Daily Show.
of course our problem is with media in general. I’m a giant critic of the entire media system; if you read through my posts you’ll certainly see that. the thing is: We don’t need to let The Daily Show off the hook because it’s slightly better than most—or perhaps more importantly, we need to realize that it is part of the giant for-profit media system and that even The Daily Show, awesome as it may be, falls victim to many of the same issues.
This is the thing: picking out one specific program/issue for critique at the moment doesn’t mean the rest of them aren’t just as bad or far worse. It means that sometimes you need to look at specific examples.
